Why the SAPP should not leave Barisan – 24th June 2008 (Tuesday)

‘My stand in the party is that whatever we do, it cannot read as supporting (Datuk Seri) Anwar (Ibrahim). There is a lot of speculation whether there is a pact between (Party president) Datuk Yong Teck Lee and Anwar.

From any reading of it, I won’t say I have all the information of their communication but I have some, which I could also conclude to say that ‘well, there are some arrangements that you (Yong) are working for him.’

The rest of the details I don’t have. So, I don’t want to come out like I am accusing my boss (Yong) there is a pact or not a pact because the issue being taken by Umno is that there is a pact.
If I were to say that, then I’m just a traitor, no feed information to Umno and whack Yong and say there is a pact.

My stand is, there are certain things that we have to wait… before you can come to a conclusion (whether there is a pact or not). Like for example, you say I’m not working with Anwar but the next day Anwar comes to Sabah campaigning with us and you see Yong, Raymond… all walking with him.

What will people think? This is an example (but) could it happen? It is my assessment, especially if we leave BN now, the people are free to assume, why not you work with the opposition because you sing almost the same tune…

This Jeffery’s song of fighting for the right of Sabah or what not and Yong’s song for (political) autonomy and before this… song of Borneonisation.  Borneonisation , 20-points… all this is about the same thing.

And if you sing it together with Anwar and you campaign with Anwar that will people think? I would say it is wrong and it would add to the assumption that there is a pact. It doesn’t need to be in a written form where you have to sign it but it is your actions. So this is my assumption if you are out of BN.

That is why I stand so firmly and I think now the party has unanimously agreed – this time really unanimous – that we are in BN. We are not quitting.

But we are waiting to be sentenced to death. It is a very sad feeling. You are probably listening to a politically dying man as we are going to be out of BN already.

I am already seeing that Anwar is trying to claim the credit. It worries me why Anwar is claiming the credit, which I cannot deny, which we can see in the newspaper now. He is claiming credit that these two (SAPP) MPs are already in his hand (and) now its down to 28, why is the claiming this? And the action again leads to the conclusion that there is a pact.

Now, what I want to explain is the Sabah Declaration as announced by Yong. We are in total agreement when you fight for the interest of Sabah. This is like what the 20-point kind of approach and that now as Yong says there is a window of opportunity we are very clear with what we want and this is what we want for the people in Sabah.

We will die for this, we will fight for this. Nobody in the world will argue with us that we are wrong, especially Sabah. But because we are so vocal and so good, it rattles the political atmosphere in Sabah right down to KL.

So, a small party like SAPP with two MPs going for a vote of no confidence against Pak Lah is insignificant, as far as I am concerned, which I think other component BN leaders would look at us and say you can’t do much anyway.

But, why is Anwar still interested and claiming the credit? The other leaders of component BN parties say it is insignificant for two MPs to do any damage.
My assessment is that Anwar is not interested in these two MPs motion of no confidence bla bla… his interest is in Yong and SAPP as a whole.

Nobody in Sabah would say Yong is not fighting for the people of Sabah. And nobody, know Yong, will say he will stop with all these threats, demonstrations and ACA action taken.
You can’t stop Yong, you can’t stop Raymond inside and you can’t even stop SAPP inside. So you see, this party is seen in the hearts of the people of Sabah and been accepted by the people of Sabah.

It is a very popular party (and) if SAPP is out of BN it is up for grabs. Anwar is a political opportunist, extremely smart and makes people think that he is not only got two (MPs) but (actually), no, he wants the whole things.

He (Anwar) sees the future of Sabah, he has the vision that will fit into his agenda. That is my assessment. You can treat it as me grumbling but the only problem is we don’t want to associated with him.

If you talk to our party members and even to the people, everyone would say why you want to work with him (Anwar), you cannot do it ar? Why should we associate ourselves with Anwar and the opposition to fight for Sabah’s interest?

But if we are removed from BN and we are up for grabs with the sentiments already created we would have nowhere to go and fall completely into his (Anwar’s) agenda. That is what I don’t want to see happen. And if in two weeks time this happens, you will know why.

It looks like there is a possibility of this happening… expulsion… and our people very desperate. There will be a lot of anger on the BN and with a lot of support from the people it could happen in the next two weeks, but I hope not.

If that happens, Anwar wants us as a ready platform so that he will be singing the same song with us. He will accept our declaration (and) sing together the lyrics (SAPP Sabah Declaration). I would not want to see that happens.

In my view, BN must come in full support of our so-called issues or our Sabah Declaration, our fight for people of Sabah. But it looks like instead of getting support from the component party the voice of support is getting very weak. To a certain extent some of them who were supporting Sabah issues since Pak Lah was here are now completely silent.

They are now more concerned in punishing us but I can’t blame them because it is wrong to table a motion against Pak Lah. Yes there are views that a lot of people have said it as well but it is totally wrong it should not be done that way.

The component party playing by the book will say look you do this you will be punished and I will not deny the right of the discipline and they wanted to take. What I want to make clear is that ‘please see us with a clear mind of the objective where we stand.’

That is why my objection to this course of action. I must admit this is totally wrong to pursue but I’m very happy that Pak Lah see this. Otherwise while I’m talking we could have been expelled last Thursday even before the Supreme Council meeting.

And this is the part where I’m not happy with Yong where something is done and you get punished and the rest of us of the Supreme Council didn’t know about it. By the time we get to the Supreme Council meeting it is there already.

If you announced it on Wednesday and action is taken against you on Thursday then what is the point of having a meeting on Friday. Do then talk. It cannot be like that.
Just by announcing like that already created havoc and if punishment came on Thursday there was nothing to deliberate on Friday. But thank God, Pak Lah understands and he was able to tell the other members of the BN Supreme Council (not to take action against SAPP).
